Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez has endured somewhat of a hit-and-miss career since joining Manchester United in 2010. The 26-year-old enjoyed a very successful start to his Man United career, forcing his way into the starting XI as a result of his hard-work and magnificent eye for goal at the expense of Dimitar Berbatov who was also enjoying a very successful campaign that season. In fact, it is a testament to how talented Chicharito proved to be that he forced the Bulgarian out of the team seeing as the latter ended up with 22 goals, including hat-tricks against Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City.
Despite Berbatov's magnificent season which saw him tie with Carlos Tevez as the Premier League top goalscorer for 2010/11 season, he was put on the sub bench for a decent proportion of the second half of the season by Chicharito which is a massive compliment to the Mexican's ability.
In 154 appearances for the Reds, Hernandez has scored an impressive 59 goals bearing in mind a good proporion of those appearances came as a substitute. After 3 rather inconsistent seasons at the Manchester side in terms of appearances, Hernandez was sent to Real Madrid on loan for this season. His role at the current European champions has been incredibly restricted with the Mexican only making appearances off of the bench.
Despite this lack of game time, Chicharito has scored 3 goals in the 10 games which he has played which is actually quite impressive bearing in mind the role he has with Los Blancos. Unfortunately, this does not change the fact that his game time has been alarmingly restricted when at Madrid which may call into question whether or not he gets a look in when and if he returns to Old Trafford.
Despite this, Chicharito is deserving of more of a chance at Old Trafford. So far this season, United have been very limited up front with Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie offering very little in the way of movement and potency, James Wilson is too inexperienced and Wayne Rooney has been restricted to a role in midfield thus limiting his contribution to games.
What this has led to is goals coming from all sorts of areas on the pitch with Daley Blind getting 2, Fellaini getting 4 and Juan Mata sometimes contributing when he has gotten a game. Performance level has also dropped as a result with the midfield unable to create anything with van Persie and Falcao remaining completely stagnant.
Unless Van Gaal is willing to give Wilson a fair crack at game time or is able to sign a top quality striker in the summer, Hernandez may be his knight in shining armour. There can be little doubt that Hernandez possesses pace and movement in abundance and takes pride in making defenders sweat when they are marking him. His ability to find space and run into it, coupled with a gift to find the back of the net out of instinct, makes him one of the deadliest strikers in Europe when given the opportunity to shine.
His movement and enthusiasm is exactly what Manchester United need as of now which makes loaning him out to Madrid in the first place quite a regretable decision in hindsight which makes it essential that, once he returns to Old Trafford, Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward retains a striker in Hernandez which would guarantee goals on a regular basis.
